OUR HISTORY:

– 1980s, Opening

Armstrong International was founded by Martin Armstrong who was keen to launch a consultancy specialising in financial services that could adapt to the changing dynamics of the City. In 1989, Goldman Sachs and SG Warburg were retained as clients.

– 1990s, Asset Management Division

AI’s rapid expansion continues as it opens its Asset management Division working for Fidelity. AI help build out the London team for Long-Term Capital Management, a large hedge fund that nearly collapses the global financial system in 1998 as a result of high-risk arbitrage trading strategies.

– 2000s , AI adds core clients

AI adds Merrill Lynch as a core client and continues to work with the organization today. AI founds Armstrong Bonham Carter to evaluate boards. AI Chairman, Martin Armstrong places former UK Prime Minister at Global Investment Bank..

– 2010s, Marketing Push

AI expands client list by 400% following development of dedicated marketing team. AI increases its media presence by publishing articles and survey results that are featured in the Financial Times, Fortune Magazine and Reuters.

  • Being Technical

    The financial services industry is complex. The reasons that people work for one company or another are not always clear or obvious. To move someone in the fiduciary trusts business, for example, is not a simple task, involving far more than the brand of the client involved. When Armstrong International begins the process of persuasion, a very sophisticated conversation takes place in which all the attributes of our client are placed before the prospective candidate. Whilst many of our competitors focus on delivering scale, we focus on delivering expertise.

  • Being Long Term

    Armstrong International actively seeks long term engagement with our clients. We still work for the first client we ever had in UBS. In 25 years and through multiple iterations, we have remained faithful to their vision and supportive of its execution. We recognise that client activity will wax and wane through the business cycle but our partnership model remains committed to nurturing relationships through the long term. It has been our happy experience that this level of service results in great things: we understand our clients, they trust us and together we can communicate that across the market.

  • Serving the Industry

    The search industry is not perfect. It can be far too transactional. Prevailing economic models can drive search firms to scrabble for placements rather than solve problems, resulting in up to 40% of searches not reaching a successful conclusion, a benchmark we regard as far too low. At Armstrong International, we teach our people to serve the industry, to try to improve it and to try to explain to people that search is about understanding and persuasion rather than global reach.
